What is Day One Shortlist?

6 min

Updated: October 15, 2026

Summary

The Day One shortlist is the ranked set of vendors a B2B buying group names when it formally starts a purchase process. The list surfaces on Day One but forms during Day Zero, the long period of brand exposure and trust-building that comes before active buying. By the time it appears, inclusion has largely been decided.

Why the Day One shortlist matters

The Day One shortlist is the strongest early predictor of who wins a deal. 6sense (2025) found that the winning vendor was already on the Day One shortlist 95% of the time, and the vendor buyers favored before first contact won roughly four out of five deals. Position on the list also matters, as 94% of buyers ranked their shortlist by preference before engaging any vendor.

For marketing leaders, this moves the goal from creating late-stage interest to winning preference early. INFUSE Voice of the Buyer 2026 research shows what buyers weigh when they build the list:

  • Use-case fit: 58% shortlist vendors with strong alignment to their use case, technical requirements, or existing stack, so a brand must be known for solving a specific problem
  • Proof of value: 37% cite demonstrated ROI and 36% cite references and case studies
  • Brand visibility: 32% cite market and brand visibility, which ranks below fit and proof, so awareness alone rarely earns a slot
  • Buying group consensus: Buying groups now average nine stakeholders, so the list reflects what many roles already believe

A vendor missing from the Day One shortlist rarely wins, however strong its offering.

What is the difference between the Day One shortlist and the Day Zero shortlist?

The two terms describe one consideration set at two moments. The Day Zero shortlist is the set as it forms, while preferences are still open to influence. The Day One shortlist is the same set at the point the buying group commits to a formal search. By then, membership is largely locked, and only the order can still change.

The practical distinction is timing, as a vendor earns its place during Day Zero, and the buying group formalizes it on Day One.

How do you get on a buyer's Day One shortlist?

Because the Day One shortlist reflects Day Zero preferences, a vendor earns its place by establishing influence before the formal purchase process begins.

  • Brand recognition: Run always-on awareness programs that reach target accounts months before they enter the market, and track aided and unaided recall in those accounts to confirm the brand is known before research begins.
  • Thought leadership: Publish original research and point-of-view content on a fixed cadence, built around the business problems buying groups need to solve, so the brand becomes a familiar reference on those problems.
  • Buying group presence: Map every role on target buying groups, from end users to finance and IT. Then tailor content and outreach to the priorities and objections of each role.
  • Discoverability: Audit how search engines, review platforms, peer communities, and LLMs describe the brand today. Correct any inaccuracies, fill content gaps, and publish structured content that answers buyer questions directly so those sources can cite it.
  • Social proof: Publish client case studies with measurable outcomes, ask clients for reviews on the platforms buyers consult, and support client advocates who speak for the brand in peer communities.

Late-stage tactics rarely add a vendor to a list that has already formed, so the reliable path to earning a spot on the Day One shortlist is through sustained Day Zero investment.

What happens after the Day One shortlist is set?

Once the Day One shortlist is revealed, the buying group moves into formal evaluation, comparing the named vendors through research, demos, and internal consensus-building. The competitive field is largely closed, and vendors not on the list rarely break in, because buyers take this time to confirm and narrow existing preferences rather than to discover new options.

For vendors on the list, the priority shifts to buyer enablement, helping the group build consensus, reduce perceived risk, and justify the decision. For those left off, the more productive response is to strengthen Day Zero presence for the next cycle.

How do you measure Day One shortlist performance?

Day One shortlist performance is measured at two points: whether the brand makes the list, and whether a place on the list converts to a win.

Day One shortlist indicators

IndicatorWhat it signalsType
Shortlist inclusion rateHow often the brand makes target-account listsInclusion
Brand awareness and recallWhether the target market recognizes the vendorPresence
Share of search and share of voiceVisibility relative to competitorsPresence
Presence in LLM responsesWhether AI tools surface the brand accurately when buyers build listsDiscoverability
Win rate on early-entered dealsWhether shortlist position converts to winsImpact
Sales cycle lengthWhether pre-existing trust accelerates decisionsImpact

Since the shortlist position is built across the long Day Zero window, these measures should be tracked as trends rather than single-period results.

Key takeaways

  • The Day One shortlist is the ranked set of about four vendors a buying group names when formal buying begins.
  • The list forms during Day Zero and surfaces on Day One, so inclusion is largely decided before any vendor contact.
  • The winning vendor is on the Day One list 95% of the time, and the favorite before first contact wins about four in five deals.
  • Buyers rank shortlists based on use-case fit, proof of value, and brand visibility, which vendors build through Day Zero recognition, thought leadership, buying group presence, discoverability, and social proof.
  • After the list is set, vendors on it should support buying group consensus formation, while vendors left off should focus on building presence for the next cycle.
  • Measure Day One inclusion, shortlist rank, and win rate by entry point, tracked as trends.
